Classified somewhere between a regular filling and a crown, dental inlays and onlays can fix a decayed or damaged tooth. Used on premolars and molars, a dental inlay covers the indented middle of a tooth while an onlay covers the tooth's rounded, upper edges. Like dental crowns and fillings, onlays and inlays can be created out of high-grade ceramic material during the same office visit using the state-of-the-art E4D Dentist™ system. Dr. Harshit Aggarwal and Dr. Leonel Perez can help Annandale, VA patients better understand crowns, fillings, onlays, and inlays so they can make an informed decision about how to treat their teeth at the Center for Dentofacial Aesthetics.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays at the Center for Dentofacial Aesthetics in Annandale, VA offer many benefits as less invasive and enduring oral restorations for broken or eroded teeth, including:

  • Keeps more of your natural tooth in comparison with conventional dental crown treatments
  • Offers sturdiness and long-lasting results
  • Resists blotching and discoloration, creating a brighter aesthetic
  • Decreases the risk of additional infection or chipping by sealing the tooth
  • Offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional dental crowns
  • Enhances the overall resilience and function of the tooth
  • Gives you a comfortable and functional bite
  • Combines well with your nearby teeth

An onlay or inlay is a good option when you've got a chipped tooth or a large cavity that's too big to get filled but does not need the complete protection of a crown. During your dental exam, Dr. Aggarwal can examine your digital x-rays to determine the ideal procedure for your tooth. If an inlay or onlay is chosen, he will discuss the available materials that will best meet your requirements. You may even discuss whether you'd like a direct restoration (an inlay or onlay created in our office using CEREC technology while you wait) or an indirect restoration made at a dental laboratory.

After applying numbing cream or local anesthesia to your gums, Dr. Aggarwal or Dr. Perez will start by cleaning out areas of decay. Other techniques of sedation can be used if you experience anxiety or a strong gag reflex. Once the tooth is cleaned, 3D images will be produced from your tooth using a handheld laser scanner. Then, your inlay or onlay can be created and placed during the same day for your convenience using the E4D Dentist computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology. Once your inlay or onlay is ready, Dr. Aggarwal or Dr. Perez will carefully set and then bond it to your tooth. The edges will then be polished or adjusted to fit so that your tooth is properly covered and feels right.

Great experience with this Dental Office. I have been going here for years. I would highly recommend.

My recent crown removal, cavity repair, temporary crown, and permanent crown placement was terrific. Additionally, our BCBS FEP Dental insurance made the price reasonable. It was the smoothest cavity/crown process in my dental experience.

My wait time for my appointment was only about 7-8 minutes. Stephanie is my Dental Tech, and, as always she was personable, detailed, and professional.

About Us
Will my insurance cover inlays and onlays?

Because inlays and onlays are used to preserve tooth structure and are not merely for cosmetic reasons, most dental insurance policies cover a portion of the cost of dental inlays and onlays. Our practice also offers affordable financing options for patients who need them.

Do inlays and onlays fix cavities?

Inlays and onlays help keep teeth strong, preserving tooth structure and acting much like fillings to fill in or cover spaces where cavities have developed. They also minimize further decay to the existing tooth. Dental practitioners consider inlays and onlays to be great alternatives to fillings, crowns, and other restorations.

Does the procedure hurt?

No, but to make sure you are comfortable during the procedure, we apply numbing cream or local anesthesia to your gums as dentists clean out areas of decay. Other sedation techniques can be used if you experience anxiety or a strong gag reflex.

How long do inlays and onlays last?

Inlays and onlays can be beneficial to oral health because of their durability and longevity. You can expect these tooth restorations to last up to 20 years or more, in some cases. To ensure the restorations stay in good shape, be sure to visit a dentist twice a year and get regular professional cleanings. Routine maintenance allows our dentists to catch any issues early and make any necessary adjustments.
