Removable full or partial dentures are held in place with adhesives while overdentures are implant-supported dentures that are connected to metal posts in your jaw in order to fit securely. Overdentures can be removable or fixed, depending on your preferences. Full dentures restore all of the teeth in the upper arch, lower arch, or both, and partial dentures are used if some of your teeth still remain intact. These prosthodontic pieces should make it easier to speak and eat with confidence while enhancing the look of your smile following tooth loss. At the Center for Dentofacial Aesthetics, Annandale, VA patients can get custom dentures that look natural and feel comfortable. See if dentures or overdentures will work for your needs by scheduling a consultation with prosthodontist Dr. Harshit Aggarwal or oral surgeon Dr. Leonel Perez.

Who is a Candidate for Dentures and Overdentures?

A consultation with either Dr. Aggarwal or Dr. Perez can help determine if dentures or overdentures are the best solutions for replacing lost teeth. Generally, candidates will have lost natural teeth in their top and/or bottom arch or have some remaining teeth that cannot be saved due to decay or damage. Our dental team can perform an examination and evaluate the treatment areas before moving forward. We may also take detailed images of your mouth to get a better view of the affected teeth and gums. Inform us of any medical conditions and allergies that could impact your treatment. This allows us to customize a plan that best fits your needs and provides the most comfortable, durable results.

We will start the process by taking 3D or physical impressions of your top and bottom arches. These impressions are then given to our partnering dental lab to create your personalized full or partial dentures. If you are getting overdentures, we will use digital imaging to evaluate the strength of your jawbone and gums to ensure they are strong enough to accept the implants. Local anesthesia will be administered to numb your mouth before the surgery. Sedation options may be considered if you have dental anxiety. We will make surgical incisions in your gums and put implants in the jawbone. Four or more posts are needed per arch. The gums will be sutured with part of the post remaining above the gumline. A temporary denture will be used to cover the posts as your mouth heals over the next 4 – 6 months. The implants will integrate with your gums and jaw. Once the implants are secure, your custom-made dentures can be attached to the posts and adjusted for a secure fit.

Returning to your regular tasks, including eating and speaking comfortably, could require some getting used to after getting dentures or overdentures, but they will become easier over time. Whenever your dentures or overdentures feel odd or like they are slipping, contact Center for Dentofacial Aesthetics so we can plan a follow-up. For regular dentures, you should care for your dentures by cleaning them with a delicate brush after every meal and soaking them in water at night to prevent them from drying out. Overdentures can be cleaned like natural teeth with daily brushing and flossing. We urge you to stop by Center for Dentofacial Aesthetics for regular checkups so Dr. Aggarwal can monitor the state of your dentures and overdentures and your total dental health for many years to come.
